Johansson was raised within New York City as the mother of an architect as well as an executive from a production firm. Hunter is the sister of Johansson was also born in the City of New York. Johansson was next seen in Just Cause (1995), prior to her breakthrough by starring in Manny & Lo - a story about two sisters, orphans who are able to escape. After that, she earned high praise from critics for her performance as an teen girl who suffered an accident that resulted in her being with a blemish as she appeared in The Horse Whisperer (1998). The film gained her more acclaim with the film Ghost World (2002) as the outcast cynical Rebecca. Smith landed a first role in the age of 6 with her parents' encouragement. Smith was in a television commercial for Dannon yogurt. Like other young actresses, she honed her skills in the theatre. When she performed her stage debut in Wildflower she would also work with various theatre projects in the USA. She was a graduate of her Stonestreet Studios Conservatory of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
